When T-Mobile first began offering the iPhone 5 in April the device was available for $99 down plus $20 each month for 24 months. That promotion has ended, TmoNews learned, which means that you are actually going to pay $629 for the device instead of the Apple price of $579. T-Mobile also increased the down payment price of the 32GB option to $249 and the 64GB option to $349.
None of us knew that the $99 original price was simply a promotion. T-Mobile is trying to move customers away from Sprint, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, but it’s deals don’t look very persuasive when the cost of the phone is just $50 less than the $199 price on those competing carriers. T-Mobile’s Simple Choice plans might still prove competitive, however, although you still need to pay the cost of your smartphone if you decide to walk away from the plans before your 24 month “non-contract” is up.
