Avoiding Potential Text Message Scams on Your Phone

Apr 21, 2022

While many of the phone repair services we assist clients with at FixIT Mobile speak to physical damage, such as to the screen or elsewhere, there are also certain software and related risks that may be present. These can sometimes be the result of various security attacks or related concerns, and one common format here is the text message scam.

These kinds of scams are dangerous for a few reasons, but can also be easily avoided if you know how to spot them. Here's a quick primer on how they work and what you can do to ensure you never fall victim to such an attack.

How Text Message Scams Work

While there are a few specific types of text message scam out there, the general idea behind all of them is to get you to click on a malicious link. This link may masquerade as something harmless, such as an update to your favorite app, or a notification from a service you use regularly. Once you click the link, however, it will often take you to a fake website that looks very similar to the real thing. This website will then prompt you to enter sensitive personal information, such as your login credentials or credit card number.

Of course, once you enter this information, it goes straight into the hands of the scammer, who can then use it to commit identity theft or other crimes.

Our next couple sections will go over tips on how to avoid these scams.

Don't Respond, Report

There's a tendency from some who receive these texts to respond with some kind of "STOP" or other message, but this is actually a bad idea. By responding, you're confirming to the scammer that your number is active, which means they're more likely to continue sending messages (or even make phone calls) in an attempt to get what they want.

The best thing you can do if you receive one of these texts is to simply ignore it and delete the message. If you're concerned that the scammer may have your information, you can also report the number to your carrier so they can investigate.

Block the Number

If you want to go even further here, you can block the number that the text came from. This will ensure that you no longer receive any messages (or calls) from that number, and in most cases, you won't even see the message come through.

Blocking a number on your phone is usually pretty simple. On an iPhone, for example, you just need to open the Message app, find the number you want to block, tap on it, and then select "Block Contact."

For Android users, the process is a little different. You'll need to open the Messages app, tap on the three dots in the top right-hand corner, select "Settings," and then choose "Blocked contacts." From here, you can add the number to your block list.
