Choosing Ideal Phone Case for Protection, Part 2

Aug 3, 2021

In part one of this multi-part blog series, we went over some basics on choosing the ideal phone case to protect your phone. Phone cases provide excellent value to many users, both for protection and other purposes, and going without one leaves your phone at much larger damage risk. At FixIT Mobile, adding a case is one of the single most common pieces of advice we give to clients when we provide common phone repair services for issues like cracked screens, water damage or related concerns – problems that are often avoided if you have a quality case. We’ll help you find the ideal case to protect your device, including for those who require high levels of protection. Today’s part two of our series will begin looking into several of the phone case types out there to help you narrow down which will be best for you.

Slim or Basic

For those who don’t want anything too bulky and are fine with going with style over protection to some degree, a slim case is a good option. It will protect against basic scratches on the covered areas and will provide some fall protection, though this is limited.

These cases, also sometimes called basic cases, are generally made of a material called TPU. This material is durable and somewhat malleable to fit the phone, but not as protective as certain other materials we’ll get into here later on.

Rugged Cases

For those who want some of the best protection available for their phone and who don’t mind a bit of bulkiness, the rugged case is usually your best route. These cases include features like air pockets, reinforced corners and strong, durable material that will not wear down even after significant wear-and-tear.

Phones with such cases are generally protected from a huge range of potential damage, even including water and dust based on their strong seal. Due to their bulkiness, some may require you to purchase a belt clip or holster rather than storing in your pocket.

Tough Cases

For a good combination of protection and aesthetics, tough cases are a realm to look into. These will generally include a basic layer of polycarbonate plus an inner layer of silicone or another soft material to absorb impact.

These cases will be bulker than slim options, but nowhere near as heavy or large as rugged cases. They also come in numerous styles that allow you to still access every feature of the phone. Very affordable in the range of $15 to $40, these are some of the most common phone cases chosen.
