iPhone Shortcut Features: GIFs, Links, Shopping, Customization

Dec 14, 2021

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the most useful and popular iPhone shortcuts that users should consider. From the actual Shortcuts app that's pre-installed in new iPhones to the various shortcut flows that can be created within it, you have a plethora of customization options when it comes to how you use your smartphone. At Bad Apple, we're here not only to provide quality iPhone repair services, but also to offer our clients basic expertise on the top functions and uses of their devices. What are some of the other top shortcuts you may consider within your iPhone? Here are several to keep in mind.

Make Your Own Gif

Titled "Shoot a GIF," this is an iPhone Shortcut that allows you to generate image-based creations on the go. The premise is simple: Record a video of up to six seconds, and it will be automatically converted into a GIF that can be shared with whomever you choose.

This is an excellent shortcut to use if you want to quickly share your reaction to something or just want to have some fun with friends. All you need to do is tap from the Today View widget, or use voice commands activated by Siri.

It's important to note that this shortcut uses your camera, similar to the "Take a Selfie" shortcut. So, make sure you're in a well-lit space if you want to avoid any unnecessary photo editing later on.

Check Suspicious Links

Another valuable Shortcut plugin for the iPhone is the "Expand URL" Shortcut, which lets you preview links before you open them. This is a great way to stay safe online by quickly identifying potentially malicious websites.

All you need to do is drag and drop the "Expand URL" shortcut into your Shortcuts app, and then input the suspicious links you want to check. The shortcut will automatically open the website in a new tab and highlight where the link will take you.

Tip: Make sure your iPhone or iPad is updated with the latest iOS version to ensure that this shortcut runs smoothly.

This Shortcut sounds pretty goofy, but it's one that tracks Amazon's price history and can even alert you when items you need have entered your price range. It's a great shortcut to keep in mind if you're a price-conscious shopper, and it's easy to utilize as well.

Create Your Own

Finally, the Automation tab in newer iPhones lets you customize your own Shortcuts. You can set any trigger you want, from location to time of day, and create your own customized shortcut.

The most popular of these shortcuts is the one that automatically turns off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you go out, so you don't have to worry about draining unnecessary battery life throughout the day.
