Troubleshooting Charging Issues: Restart and Timing

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on how to troubleshoot charging issues for your smartphone. There might be a few simple explanations for why your phone is having issues charging or won’t charge at all; in other cases, this issue may indicate a larger problem that requires phone repair or replacement. What are some of the other basic troubleshooting methods you can attempt if your phone isn’t charging, and what can you do about one common message your phone may give you in this situation? If none of the steps we went over in part one are working for your phone, it’s time to move to an old reliable: Restart the device, typically using the force restart command. Performing this is different depending on which iPhone model you have:

  • iPhone 8 or later: Quickly press and release the upward volume button, then do the same with the downward volume button. Then, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Hold the side button and the downward volume button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.

  • iPhone 6 and earlier: Hold down the home button and the side button until you see the Apple lopo.

Once the Apple logo shows up, this means your device is turning back on. Once this happens, plug it back in for 30-60 minutes and try to charge it again.

Leave Plugged In

Speaking of that 30-60-minute timeline, it’s often used alone to help with charging issues. For devices that have completely died, especially older ones, it may take quite a bit to regain enough power to even turn them on. While you should see a dead battery icon come onto the screen after a few minutes, you may have to leave the device charged for at least 30 minutes before you can turn it on.

“Accessory Not Supported”

Finally, what if your phone shows you a message like “Accessory Not Supported” or something similar? This may indicate that you’re using a non-Apple certified charger, but it also could signal debris in your charging port or a phone that needs to be updated to the latest iOS version.
